Stratford’s skyline may soon gain an exhilarating new attraction, with plans unveiled for a dramatic zip line experience launching from the top of the ArcelorMittal Orbit in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.
The proposal, submitted by adventure company Zip World, outlines the construction of a new launch platform 80 metres up the Orbit and a 38.7-metre-tall return tower across the park. Suspended steel cables will connect the two structures, giving riders a 425-metre high-speed journey before being winched back to the start.
Adding to Stratford’s appeal
Zip World, which took over operations of the Orbit earlier this year, expects the attraction to draw an extra 60,000 visitors annually. They argue it will:
- Keep the park buzzing year-round, even outside of major events,
- Diversify Stratford’s leisure offer beyond shopping and sports,
- Strengthen London’s reputation as a global tourist destination, and
- Create 20–30 local jobs across different skill levels.
The company already runs the popular “Helix” slide around the Orbit, alongside the 360-degree viewing deck. A future “gravity descender” ride is also being considered.
Designed to blend in
According to plans, the return tower will use a lightweight tripod structure finished in white to minimise its visual impact. The launch platform will be built from stainless steel to match the Orbit’s existing staircase. Landscaping around the new tower is planned to tie in with improvements already approved for nearby Mandeville Place. The plans suggest the zip line will add “visual interest” without harming key views of the park.
What’s next
If approved, the project could be up and running by 2026, bringing an entirely new way to experience one of Stratford’s most recognisable landmarks.
